5.0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE for pet lovers/cat litter rooms!!, April 26, 2010

FINALLY! All other gates on the market with a small-pet hole are actually for large pets, not children, and have different safety standards, so this has been a long time coming. Important to us not to destroy our cats lives during our son's growing years. Our 1 year old is successfully "caged" while our cats roam. Both cats - one a little stupid; one shy, had no problems at all figuring out how to use it and seem relieved for the barrier and escape route. MUST HAVE for keeping our son out of the room with our cat litters!! Some reviews mention children crawling thru, but it would be a very low, complicated, tight squeeze for any child with a moderate head size even tho our heafty cat squeezes thru. Only complaint would be they don't also make a swing-door version. Safety 1st could make a killing offering a doored version and an x-tra long. Brilliant price and genius product for anyone who considers their cats family too. VERY nice looking - chocolate stained wood and high-quality... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Not good for large cats, but works well for smaller ones..., October 18, 2010

This gate is great for smaller cats, probably about 10 lbs or less. I have one cat that is approximately 18 lbs and he can't fit through the opening. Instead, he has to jump over. If they made a larger opening, the gate would be great.

Though I would purchase this gate again, there are some points of interest to share:
1. The gate leaves black marks on the walls. Our walls are a tan/creme color and we have black rings and smudges from the rubber stoppers on the side of the gate.

2. If your baby is anything like ours, once our son became more mobile, the cat hole became a game for him. He throws small items through the hole to the other side. Mind you, he does the same over the gate but in case you have any concern about this, it's good to know.

3. Finally, the gate can shift along the wall if enough force is used. Our son is 28 lbs and is able to... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible design, December 1, 2011

I wanted this gate to work, since there are very few that work for children and pets. But this gate is not it. The manufacturers of this gate have managed to make it only sort of adjustable. Yes, it adjusts from 29.5 to 42"... in 1/2 inch increments only. And the minimum width is really 30", counting the rubber stopper things that fit against the wall/door frame. So if your house is older (even just 30 years, like mine) and has apparently non-standard doors of less than 30 inches, this gate will not work. My other thought was that it could work in the hallway... nope. We have a base trim. And because the trim sticks out from the wall more than 3/8" (the distance between the gate frame and the stopper bit), it will not work, even if there was a notch that fit the width of the hallway.

So if you have standard 30" doors, or your hallways do not have base trim and are less than 42" at an exact 1/2" increment, then sure, this gate is for you. I'm sending it back.
