5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy, reliable gate, November 8, 2009

I have had this gate for many years now and find it both extremely sturdy and also very easy to use with one hand. To define sturdy, by the way, I mean that a large dog can jump up against it or scratch it with no harm done - and with the dog still inside or outside of whichever room you're trying to block. The gate is made of enameled metal with a hard plastic latching mechanism, and in spite of being scratched at daily for almost seven years by our Dalmation, the finish looks good as new on our gate.

Of course if your dog is large and a jumper, it may be able to clear the gate. As the gate is 30" high, however, most dogs won't even attempt it. Climbers will also find it a bit challenging as there isn't anything to easily brace their feet against (in contrast to other gates which include cross bars or chain-link-type mesh). In the case of jumpers, the entire gate can also be raised a couple of inches to pose a greater challenge (but be forewarned that spouses - or you... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Has made my life easier every day, July 27, 2011

I needed a swinging gate to keep my dogs in the utility room when I need to confine them. I had been using a pressure gate so that I had to remove the entire gate to get through the doorway. This was difficult when carrying groceries or laundry. I bought this swinging gate, and the delivery was amazing because I had the gate in 2 days. Setting up the gate was easy and we use it numerous times every day. The only thing that would make it absolutely perfect would be if it had rubber bumpers at the bottom that could accomodate curved molding along the floor. Because I have curved molding, I have two choices: remove the molding and leave my doorway looking unfinished OR put the gate in place above the molding which does create a small trip hazard since the horizontal bar which should be flush to the floor has to be 2" off the floor to be above the top of the curved molding.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, December 15, 2009

I have two small dogs that I wanted to prevent from running up and down the stairs and this gate serves the purpose, but it is flimsy flimsy! I would definitely not trust this thing around children. If you turn the side knobs tight enough to hold it snug against the walls, the gate won't open or close. Loosening the side knobs allows the gate to swing free, but there is also enough give that the pressure feet that are against the walls slide and scrape the drywall up. The spring-loaded handle was broken when we received it (I opened the package too long after I received it to be comfortable returning it) and the top-notch thingie that's supposed to sit down in the frame when the gate is closed to help secure the gate...well, that broke off within a month and we were definitely being gentle with this gate! Little plastic end pieces that go on either side to hold horizontal bars in place at top and bottom were also broken upon arrival and/or didn't fit snugly in their holes, so... Read more
