We got 2 of these, one for the entry to the kitchen and one for the base of the stairs. Up stairs is just a bonus room. It really is one hand opening and it closes and latched by itself. We have had these for months and have no regrets. I recommend these to anyone with a baby or even a pet. Installation was pretty easy, directions were easy to follow. You have to tighten it up every couple of months or so but it only takes 30 seconds. The best part is you don't have to drill into your wall and it does not leave marks either. It is really stable, our 18 month old holds onto it and shakes the door to it. It does not budge...totally solid.

I find that this gate with the extra small step at the bottom may make it even more unsafe than not having a gate at all especially if you are carrying your baby and use it at the top of the stairs. I also did not like the latch design.
One of the best looking gates on the market, so probably ok if you don't use it for top of the stairs.

Let me preface this with the fact that I am not by any means a neglectful parent. However, there is no way you can keep your eye on a toddler every second of the day (the house needs to get clean somehow). This is why I purchased baby safety items including gates for the stairs. I have had this gate at the bottom of our stairs for about 6 months now. Wasn't overly thrilled about the gate, but it seemed safe. That is, until today when my 1 yr old fell down the stairs!!!! Luckily she was not hurt too badly, probably more scared. I was so upset with myself thinking I left the door unlached (even though I've become quite [...]at making sure it is latched every time I go through it). I've since discovered that my toddler can easily open the gate. It BARELY latches anymore and she can pull it right open. I will be reporting this to the manufacturer and demanding a refund!
